LaBar Golf Renovates Shinnecock Hills Course For 2018 US Open
June 14, 2018
LaBar Golf Renovations renovated the Shinnecock Hills golf course in Long Island, NY over the course of three years. The historic course now has a cohesive look to match William Flynn's 1931 design.
LaBar was able to bring back the nostalgic windswept seaside landscape, recapturing the lost area. Fairway grass was taken out and replaced with thin, tall fescue (grown by Delea Sod).
Opens have been mowed shorter to allow for more creative recovery shots. There was also some pretty substantial widening of the fairways, but as of the 2017 Open, the USGA decided that it was too wide and required it to be changed.

In 2019, the USDA mandated that the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Long Island, NY needed to narrow their recently widened fairways after the course was renovated by LaBar Golf Renovations.
With the cooperation of the club, the grass was removed and replanted about 200 miles away in Woodstown, New Jersey. LaBar Golf Renovations spent six days cutting and rolling up grass to put on a flatbed and bring it to New Jersey, while they also unloaded the new grass and planted it. The grass on the course was replaced with about 90,000 to 100,000 square feet of fescue grass that was grown by Delea Sod.
“The U.S. Open really is, we consider, golf’s ultimate test,” said Mike Davis, the CEO of the USGA, “and accuracy needed to play a bigger role in that.”
