Honoring the Land: A Hawaiian Blessing Ceremony at Nanea Golf Club
At the outset of construction for the Nanea Golf Club project, LaBar Golf participated in a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony to honor the land and establish a respectful foundation for the work ahead. Led by a Kahu (priest or spiritual leader), the ceremony reflected a deep commitment to aloha ʻāina—the love and stewardship of the land.
This blessing marked an important first step in the project, clearing the site of past energies while creating a pono(balanced and respectful) environment. It set the intention for safety, harmony, and well-being for all who would be involved in the construction process and for those who will one day enjoy the finished course.
The ceremony incorporated several traditional elements rich in cultural meaning. Ti leaves and Hawaiian salt were used to purify and protect the land. The untying of a maile lei symbolized the opening of the space for new beginnings and was left at the site as a lasting marker. The sounding of a conch shell signaled the start of the ceremony, and an ʻōʻō stick was used to represent the project’s ceremonial groundbreaking.
Held prior to the start of construction, this blessing honored the deep connection between the land and its future use. A closing ceremony will also take place upon completion of the project, offering gratitude and marking the successful realization of the vision.
For LaBar Golf, participating in this ceremony underscores a commitment to respecting local traditions and building with integrity.
